A Drummers Life
I've played piano and guitar since the age of
9, but the drums quickly took my attention when I was introduced to a
drum at the local marching band. I went onto the drum kit in the first
year of high school when the music teacher said 'We need a drummer for
the Windband and your it!'
Five years, four music tours and many concerts
later I went off to college. Here I took all the performing
opportunities I could forming a rock band 'Loose Ends'. Despite the
dodgy name we managed to play regularly in local pubs and festivals
gaining just about enough money for the petrol home!
My time at Southampton University turned out to be a fantastic part of my life. At the end of three great
years I had been resident drummer of
the Concert band and Jazzmanix Choir. Been a guest player several times
for the symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Orchestra and alongside
playing and singing with original band 'Circus' and a Latin trio. In
addition to being Vice-President of the Concert band I held the
position of assistant conductor, conducting pieces such as 'Mars' from
the 'Planet Suite' by Holst. My time at university was immensely
rewarding and ended with a highly successful (and funky) recital and
band performance.
I wasn't quite ready for real life when I
graduated, and embarked on a 10 month crazy
adventure around the world! Was simply ideal! (But that's a story for
another time ;-)
Since returning in the summer of 2006, I've
been teaching and playing full time in
Surrey. By day I teach in various schools and at my home in
the
evenings and weekends. I spend my spare time rehearsing and
gigging with various bands, help to run a local girl guide group
and generally try to enjoy life!
